So I arrived in Kiev. And it was a fuck up. My fault—probably.
The driver that was meant to pick me up from the arrivals lounge wasn’t there. So I checked the messages from my Airbnb host, and it turned out she’d asked me to remind her about the car yesterday, which I’d forgotten about.
I walked past a bunch of drivers with signs bearing names other than my own, out of the airport and into the surprisingly cold evening. I contacted my host, and she assured me my driver was there. I tried to walk back into the concourse, but a bulky member of airport security refused to let me back in. You had to go through another entrance, and get your bags scanned again.
And so I stood outside in the cold and called my host intermittently (I don’t think—due to the language barrier—that she understood I was outside and so she wasn’t able to communicate that fact to the driver).
Then, looking through the window, I saw a guy holding up a sign with my name on it. My driver! The only problem was getting his attention, since I couldn’t re-enter.
And so I banged on the window forlornly, rather like that scene in The Graduate. To no avail. It was bulletproof glass. The guy couldn’t hear me.
Finally I caught his attention somehow and he came out to meet me. Now we ran across the car park through sleet to his car. And then he drive me through tower blocks and ads for strip clubs—on the outskirts of of the city—to the centre and my new apartment.
He went to collect my keys for me and then showed me up my new abode—an austere but serviceable flat overlooking the main square. He then sat with me for an uncomfortably long time showing me how to use the TV, before taking his $30 fee and saying goodbye.
I then went for a McDonalds and hit the supermarket.
Yep, international renegade life is glamorous as fuck.
Early night tonight—got to get up early tomorrow to hit the streets.
