The difficulty is that we fixate on the wrong things.
The difficulty is that we think that the most important thing is the beginning, whereas usually the beginning is the least important thing.
Men do this. How do I approach that girl? What should my opening line be?
The most-oft asked question of dating coaches is ‘what is your line?’
As though a ‘line’ is somehow magically going to change everything. As though it will make her fall in love with you, fall at your feet and fellate you wildly. Of course she won’t!
As though that ever had anything to do with the first thing that you say to her.
The opening line is not a verbal utterance, it is an action. It is the lever upon which the interaction is cranked into life. And as such, the opening line does not have to be anything remarkable at all.
‘Hey, I couldn’t help noticing that you are extremely pretty. My name is Troy‘ has been a favourite of mine.
If you are at a bar then things become even easier. Simply wait to be served, and, having placed your order with the barman, turn to the pretty girl next to you and say ‘Hi – I don’t believe we’ve been formally introduced yet. I’m Troy.’
Then put out your hand to shake.
The trick is to do this with enough nonchalant confidence that she is bedazzled by your charisma. You must appear overly cocky, as though the melting of maidens before your eyes, and the consequential sensual banquet that inevitably follows, is nothing new to you. It is merely what you have come to expect.
At that point you will have transcended the need to say anything spectacular at all. Your whole being is now your opening line, and your presence is sufficient to inflame passion in the most chaste of girls.
