The one mistake that truly successful people never make is simple: they do not allow their consistent dedication to their life’s mission to drop.
Not ever.
Not even for a single day.
You must ensure that you are the same. If you allow the consistency with which you attack any given task to falter then you are on a slippery slope.
Eventually, if that decline is not halted, then you will fail in what you’ve set out to do.
It’s really as simple as that.
The problem with being an entrepreneur is that as soon as your routine is no longer dictated by a boss—that is, as soon as you no longer have to be in the office from 9 to 5—then the people around you will have a tendency to take your time for granted.
This is not because they are bad people, it’s just because the majority don’t do any ‘work’ other than what they are paid for within a very formalised, discrete environment—their place of employment—and as such they find it very hard to understand that anyone else does either.
I have had this problem with girlfriends, friends and to a lesser extent family members. All are well-meaning, but few appreciate the sheer effort and time required to make a project like writing a book or maintaining a website a success.
In the last couple of years I have had break up with girlfriends and limit my time with friends in order to get the work that I’ve needed to do done.
Unfortunately, you may need to as well. That is why if you are thinking about self-employment but haven’t taken the plunge yet, you must consider extremely carefully the implications of it for your personal life.
For myself I know that success is assured as long as I continue to put hard work in on a consistent basis. And to protect that I no longer allow any distractions to get in the way. My writing and my business are my life, and simply too important to put in jeopardy just to please others.
