Why It Is Now Your OBLIGATION To Get Famous

Right now on social media we see a lot of people talking about ‘how to build a personal brand.’

And hell, I should know—I’m one of them!

So why has ‘personal brand’ become the latest buzz word in digital media? Well, like my relationship status on Facebook, ‘it’s complicated’.

There are a few factors that apply pretty much universally, though.

For a start, the rapid rise of social media over the last decade or so has meant that nearly all of us has a ‘personal brand’ of some sort already. Whether it’s a well-curated brand that shows us in our best possible light to potential customers is another matter. But we have it nonetheless.

Furthermore, something has happened in recent years that has completely upended the entertainment industry. Previously, the distribution channels were in the hands of only a very few companies (film and TV companies, record companies, publishers etc)—and were usually controlled by a very few individuals within those companies. So if you wanted to star in a movie, release an album or put out a book you were beholden to the corporate giants who dominated those industries.

Of course, many of those companies still exist. But the game has completely changed. Because through the power of the internet, and the social networks in particular, individuals can get their ideas out to millions, even billions of people at the push of the ‘publish’ button.

And it’s not just would-be entertainers who are in on the act. If you have any kind of brand, or skill, or you are in business, then you can and should use the internet to promote yourself using these same networks.

However, that’s not to say that it’s all plain sailing. In fact, there’s a new problem to contend with. Yes, the bar to entry for getting your voice heard is a lot lower. But now we are faced with an attention economy that is tough to break into unless you have real strategies in place to make yourself stand out from the crowd.

I myself am building up my own personal brand through a process of relentless content creation—blogging, writing for other sites, Tweeting, Instagram, YouTube videos. And so on.
