En Paris

In Paris it is all rainy streets and street cafes and espresso and pastries.

The city is very beautiful but the main thing about travel is that it makes you all the more keen to regroup, to return and to get on with what you’ve really set your mind on to do.

I’m in Paris visiting K, the Colombian girl. We’re having a good time but above all Paris makes me want to write. There’s too much writerly history here.

We were just in Shakespeare & Co., the famous bookstore. Celine, Bukowski, Sartre, Rimbaud, all those guys.

The issue the writer faces is that writing takes time and girls tend to be a time suck. And yet they also provide great inspiration, so maybe it all works out.

I’m told that Nietzsche died unmarried, alone and crazy. He did however write a hell of a lot of books and become world-famous.

After all, what is more important to you as a man. The cloying pleasures of sentimentality and romance followed by the deadening servitude of domesticity, or your commitment to some bigger cause – your business or your art?

If you chose the former then I hope it works out for you, but right now, in Montmartre, I’m with Nietzsche and the boys.
