Most People Who Want To Be Creative Today Are Dying Under Fluorescent Lights

Everyone wants to be a creative these days.

That’s why Soho offices with bean bags on the floor and white boards on the walls and pool tables in the corner, and free beer on Fridays, are filled with earnest millenials in designer trainers and thick-rimmed glasses tugging at their beards and harrumphing over this or that brand’s ‘market positioning’ strategy.

It’s why girls work in sub-Devil Wears Prada conditions as interns or stylists at fashion magazines, or retail brands.

Every one of these people is a creative by proxy. They near to the heart of creativity, but they are like flies on honey. They benefit from the act of creativity, by being near to it.

But they are not the proud, beautiful beas who are doing the actual creating.

I don’t blame these people, for I did exactly the same thing myself. For many years I worked ‘in media’—actually in commercial advertising roles—because I wanted to be a creative.

But surviving and thriving as a creative is hard. And because I didn’t have the balls to go down that path at that time I did what most people do, and got a job as close to the honey as I could.

But this is bullshit and it will drive you mad and make you suicidal if you let it.

The reason that Soho should really sink under the weight of all the alcohol that is drunk here is that none of those people doing those jobs are really happy.

No one actually wants to be an ‘account director’, or a ‘project manager’, or a ‘head of commercial solutions’ or whatever.

They want to paint, or sing, or write, or act. Or, you know, do something that might actually express something real about themselves. That might actually touch another human being in a way that is meaningful.

Instead they fill in spreadsheets and give powerpoint presentations, and die slowly beneath fluorescent lights.

I know. Because I was one of them.

If this is you then here is a call from the other side—get out. It doesn’t matter how you do it, who you have to bribe or kill. Just get the hell out.

This is more important than any other aspect of your life. It’s more important than building your fortune. It’s even more important than meeting girls.

Make a plan, execute it, and get the hell out. For nothing is worth more than the freedom to speak with your own voice, and to say what you really want to say.

Do it. Do it now.

I’m deadly serious.

Do it.

  1. High-value men get laid. Lower value men are ruthlessly ignored, or used for chores and money

    Define Value

    1. ‘Value’ for each man can be slightly different, but think of a famous movie star and work back from there. Leo Dicaprio – what is his value based in? He’s famous, he’s rich, he’s handsome, he’s well-dressed and well-groomed, he has charisma, he is intelligent, he has an artistic talent, he is well-dressed, well-groomed etc etc.

Now, we can’t all be Leo, but we CAN aspire to some of those things that give him value. We might not be able to be famous easily, perhaps. But we can look to improve our charisma, grooming, dress sense. We can get our shit together so we are in better shape financially.

Our overall value is based on a mosaic of these things so it makes sense for us to work on each to the best of our ability. But I’ll try and write a longer post on this subject soon.

      Hope that helps, cheers, Troy.

  2. Deep article and helpful as always. The crazy thing as i see it is that while people are hustling to live paying tax and working i clearly see immigrants (mainly uslim) chilling in social housing in prime areas of london for free and breeding – seems like a disaster for the future while hard working intelligent ppl like yourself and other have no kids – no? Evolution taking a crazy turn?

    1. Hey man, well it’s harder to see what’s happening on a macro level. But certainly I remember thinking many times when I was employed in the corporate world that there were plenty of people around me in big cities – London and Berlin – doing far less than me and seemingly having a pretty good time.

From there it was a question of trying to work out how I could do similar, although now I’m working harder than I ever was for a corporation, so there you go!

      Cheers, Troy.
